COMPARE AND CONTRAST - NYPD 8 POLICE SHOOTINGS IN 2010

NEW YORK CITY

8,000,000 population.

34,000 police officers.

8 police involved shooting deaths.

MIAMI

433,000 population

1,100 police officers

6 police involved shooting deaths.

THE DIFFERENCE?

Commissioner Raymond Kelly praised the officers' training for reducing the number so greatly over the decades.

"It is a tribute to the police officers' training and restraint as well as a reflection of a safer city that fatalities have plummeted despite an increase in police numbers and in the capacity of their firearms," Kelly said.

The reason for fewer shootings isn't that there are fewer confrontations, it's that the officers are being held more accountable, said Maria Haberfeld, a professor of police studies at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

"Police officers are placed on modified duty, there is a lot of negative press, there is a review after the incident, they face discipline, there is accountability, more now then there has been before," she said. "It can make them think twice before firing their weapons."

Overall, NYPD officers are firing fewer times and the number of people killed by police bullets each year has hovered around a dozen during the past decade. The numbers are low even as it has become easier to shoot: Before 1993, officers were armed with six-shot revolvers compared to today's 16-shot semiautomatic pistols.

2010 sees fewest fatal police shootings for NYPD

Pure incompetence from Exposito and his Gang of Predators.

Under Timoney, the same department went 22 months without shooting anyone, while crime went down.

This clown has killed 6 people and crime goes up.

And still the Herald backs Regalado. It's not all on Exposito as the mayor has said.

The violence and blood spilled on the streets is on Regalado's hands.

Apples and Oranges. It is forbidden for civilians to carry handguns in New York City. Police confrontations with armed suspects in NYC are rare. Serious penalties if you're caught carrying a handgun. Do your homework responsibly. You cannot compare these 2 cities on this one issue.

Uh, did you read the case from the Supreme Court regarding the second amendment? Forbidden from carrying guns? Requiring a license and permit, yes. Forbidden, not unless New York operates under a separate Constitution.

This post is dead on. The "I like to hunt" mentality shows the lack of restraint and discipline that Exposito has unleashed on Miami, along with the "violence with violence" message from the Mayor.

They are both responsible here.

From the article:

"...another fatal shooting occurred in June, when the department said a man started firing at officers during a search for guns and drugs."

Was that guy forbidden from having a gun?

Since when do criminals care about laws anyway.

I live and work in Miami. If some criminal is stupid enough to carry a gun and to point it at a cop I want and expect the cop to shot the idiot. I want that criminal off the streets. I want all the idiot criminals off the streets.

You have obviously not heard about the United States Constitution which guarantees even idiot criminals basic rights. Then again, most Third World countries only pay lip service to their "Constitutions."

Weak story you failed to do the research NYC has stiiffer laws and is not the crack cocaine mecca Miami is. Scarface was not just a movie its the way of life in every ghetto, a dream for the boat loads of refugees that come and land a shore. How many rubber rafts full of criminals have you seen on the Hudson???

New York is 100000 times the size Miami is you moron, and they manage to shoot less people.

You MUST be a predator cop, go back to shooting steroids and blacks.

As a taxpaying resident I don't want criminals shooting at cops. Sometimes the criminals hit the cops and other times the bullets hit innocent sleeping kids.

Sorry. I am unaware of any law that let's criminals shoot at cops. Richard Dunn makes up his own laws.

Commissioner Richard Dunn, "My people should get to shoot at cops before the cops shoot back."

Richard Dunn demanded Chief Exposito order his cops not to shoot felons who point guns at them.

Dunn wanted "his people" to have permission to shoot first...
